Homeira Mortazavi

Born in Iran, Homeira Mortazavi immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1987. She received her BFA with distinction (1996) and Master of Art Education (2002) from Concordia University, studying with Guido Molinari, Suzan Scott and Giuseppe Di Leo. Mortazavi’s figurative art deals with issues of self-identity, women’s experience and the relation between human and nature, focusing on women and flowers in particular. Mortazavi`s technical skill is repeatedly evident in the handling of both human and natural forms as she celebrates the beauty of both. Mortazavi has enjoyed both solo and group exhibitions in Canada, United States and France. She lives and works in Montreal where she has been teaching painting and drawing to adults at her studio Atelier Homeira in Westmount since 2002.

Artistic Process

As part of my artistic process, I use photography and digital manipulation to compose my paintings. I photograph women of different ethnicity and body types, as well as nature and flowers. In my artistic process, I use a simple pose that can be found in everyday life. However, rather than approaching it under the context of everyday, I de-contextualize daily condition by positioning my figures in a surreal environments. By doing so, the figure can be separated from its original function and its conventional meanings and, therefore, allowing itself to be released and perceived in new ways. To me the body is considered not only a bridge between the inner and the outer world but also as the ground that encounter the world.
